To Kit or Not to Kit

For a long time, I was convinced monthly scrapbook kits were stupid. I had visions of candy cane paper on Christmas, pink bunnies on Easter, and "I love my family!" stickers in between.

That all changed the day I discovered Scarlet Lime. And Studio Calico. And more recently, Cocoa Daisy and Label Tulip. Beautiful kits, great websites, very "with it" in terms of what's new and hot in the scrapping world.

So the question becomes....are kits worth the money?

I joined a kit (a result of having way too much free time earlier in the summer) and here's my take:

The Pros:

1. You get a box of cool scrap supplies each and every month. It just shows up on your door unannounced and therefore it feels free, even though it most definitely is not.

2. You get to experiment creatively by using color schemes and products that you wouldn't ordinarily choose for yourself.

3. Most kit clubs have member forums and galleries, so you can get inspired by what other people create with product you have.

The Cons:

1. Even the best kit probably won't be right up your alley ALL the time. And since most kit clubs require at least a 3 to 6 month subscription and don't allow you stkip months, you are likely to end up getting at least one kit that's not your style and doesn't get your mojo going.

2. Within the kits you get, there is a good chance there will something you won't like--a piece of paper, rubons, etc. This only enhances the "pile of random stuff" we scrappers seem to build anyhow.

3. It's expensive! As my husband pointed out when I first floated the idea, "anything that charges you every month adds up REALLY fast." Very true. And that means less money to just follow your heart on Two Peas.com.

What do you all think of this?

  1. Hello I linked here from Kim Watson's blog.
I agree with you about kits and haven't taken the plunge (yet!) I have too much fun shopping though and maybe this is one way of cutting back to only what you get in the kit and no additional purchases?

  2. You might be right about that Stefanie....I have been in a kit club for a few months and will post on what I've found so far!

  3. I agree and disagree- I love kits because it keeps me out of the scrapbook store. Every time I walk into one, I spend $45 or more- So to me $30 a month is not too bad. I was a kit clubber, now I'm an owner & I love it & I still spend $40 walking into a store

  5. For me, kit clubs work. When I walk into my LSS, I'll spent at least $70 and go at least twice a month! My things sit in a corner because I need to find things to coordinate....with a kit, I can just create and it keeps me busy and at home where I can't walk into a store, so my spending is less in the long run! Plus...I get more pages done!

  6. that's so funny, I used to think the same things. Now that I'm married it becomes a "partner" decision. My man joined me on a quick venture to a local scrapbook store and I ended up with a purchase of $50 dollars ! Yikes ! those are few and far between :) but i do love kit clubs. sometimes, the papers/product i "think" i wont use become my absolute fav. I love that surprise :)

    happy days,

  7. I thought kits were stupid too, but have changed my mind. I started a subscription with Little Red Scrapbook a year ago, then Jenni Bowling and Studio Calico. I have cut the sub with LRS, and instead allow myself an add-on (or two!) from SC!

So far I've never once received a kit from SC that doesn't get my mojo going. No such luck with LRS or JB, but I still love a few pieces in every kit, and that's the beauty of it: As soon as you have a couple of kits, you can mix and match!
